This past Monday, we finished up our self defense workshop for women. This was a really great group of women who were enthusiastic and excited to learn how to defend themselves.
The Workshop -- part 1
The first part of the course, covers a lot of classroom type information, ranging from a brief review about self defense laws in South Carolina, domestic violence facts, the 3 main reasons women get attacked, attack indicators, common everyday weapons, attack points to target, and the physiological changes the body goes through during an attack.
Then we go out on the dojo floor and cover basic kicks, how to punch properly, and a good guard stance.
We then worked on specific self defense techniques against a choke front and back, bear hugs front and back, wrist grabs and hair pulls.
During all my workshops, I really encourage the women to participate. This includes demonstrating the power of their voice, to actually working on their defense techniques with a partner.
The main goal of this first class is to try to examine the key elements of an attack and what you can do to try and avoid one in the first place. Our goal is to always walk (or run) away from danger. However, in the event you are trapped or surprised, I provide the tools to help you escape and defeat the attacker.
The Workshop -- part 2
During the second half of the workshop, we do a quick review of what was learned previously and then we cover the more serious aspects of an attack: sexual assualt.
We cover what to do if surrounded by more than one attacker, how to defend from the ground and what to do if a sexual assault is intended.
The last part of the workshop covered teaching the women escape techniques if their hands and legs were duct taped! This is a very challenging part of the workshop for most women, as this drill will challenge your will power.
Are you interested in taking one of my self defense workshops, but still not sure it is right for you? Listen to what some of the women had to say after our most recent seminar:
"The self-defense class was very informative and hands-on. I sincerely enjoyed the sessions. I feel more confident after this experience. I can not thank you Sensei Feldt enough!"
Tawana, 31
"The class was encouraging and informative. The instructors were nice and helpful. I learned a lot and would recommend this workshop to others!"
Rachal, 31
"Excellent presentation and I really liked the hands on part of the workshop to practice defending against certain attacks!"
Katie
"The classs was very helpful. The information about running, even with a gun was something I never knew. I also loved learning how to get out of being duct taped! Thanks for sharing."
Ginnie, 23
"This workshop was very helpful -- everything we learned was very useful. I liked that we practiced everything -- that really helped me to remember it. I thought that the amount of information was good and the review really helped me to remember. Thanks!"
Beth, 24
Certainly, one self defense workshop doesn't make you completely safe, as anyone can be surprised, however, the more you practice these techniques that defend against a specific attack, the more realistic your chances of surviving.
Thank you ladies! You made me proud!
Now practice what you learned and travel safe in your daily lives!
